These design models are exported in the form of XML specifications of FB types and FB networks, which are next imported into the Archimedes ESS to be further refined to capture the real time constraints of the control application. These models are next transformed by a transformation facility to FB-based design specs which can be further refined to meet the requirements of the control application. CORFU ESS supports, the requirements elicitation in the form of UML diagrams, exploiting a general purpose CASE tool namely IBM’s Rational Rose and their subsequent elaboration to UML analysis models. Two prototype software systems that demonstrate the applicability of this process were developed, namely CORFU ESS and Archimedes system platform. it was already mentioned in our attempt to address the open issues of the IEC FB model we have defined a model driven development process that fully exploits the IEC61499 Function block model and integrates it with UML that is the industry standard for software development.
